sharks and a bit of confusion

First of all: Happy Wednesday!!

I heard something terrible yesterday, "Shark attack on Fish Hoek beach. Man dies". I really want to say condolences to the family, i can't imagine having to lose someone so special through something so horrific! Put yourself in his position for a moment, you're just having a lovely swim in the fresh ocean waters on a hot summers day while you're on holiday and next thing (well I cant begin to describe it because I'm not sure whether you would pass out from shock or blood loss - maybe adrenalin would kick in and you wouldn't feel pain? who knows really)

Naturally I decided to have a chat with my good friend Google again and see if I could get some facts straight about the whole thing, there wasn't really too much info out there, but I did read someone's comment about it. They believe that shark attacks are inevitable because we are regularly shark cage diving and exposing ourselves to these sharks, 'of course they'll come and eat us'. I'm not sure exactly where I stand on this to be honest, either way we are in their territory - whether it's in shallow waters on a beach or in deeper waters while caged. Does the fact that, while cage diving, we look like little seals and attract the sharks with raw bloody meat change things?

In the last few weeks I decided that I really wanted to go shark cage diving, but I must admit that this has given me something to think about.

[This pic is from flikr, its a Great White Shark, the same breed responsible for attacks on Fish Hoek beach]
